By The Detroit News

Who she is: Selina Nowaczynski Gutierrez, 20, of Macomb Township, is a 1998 graduate of Dakota High School. She is expected to graduate from Oakland Community College in June with an associate's degree in liberal arts.
Why she's in the news: Gutierrez is the 2001 Ms. Michigan Belleza Latina, which is comparable to winning a Hispanic Ms. Michigan contest. Her coronation is May 19 at Mac and Ray's restaurant in Harrison Township. The national pageant will be held Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 in Kissimmee, Fla.
Gutierrez had two breast surgeries last year and now is volunteering her time to speak to young women about breast cancer through the Karmanos Cancer Institute. She said she hopes her experience will help high school students see they are not too young to be checked for breast cancer. Gutierrez also hopes that Hispanic women will listen to her message and get checked for breast cancer. Studies show that Hispanic women are among the least likely to go for an exam, but are among the most likely to have breast cancer. This fall, she will attend Central Michigan University and work on a double major in secondary education and apparel design. Gutierrez loves teaching and interacting with children, as well as having the freedom that comes from designing and sewing her own clothing.
What she says: "I like designing clothes, yet I really like to teach. I feel that I have something to give students, especially high schoolers. Growing up, there were no Hispanics in high school and I did not have that influence there for me. I want to be a role model for other Hispanics."
